In Australia, a 34-year-old woman has become a mother of four daughters in one of the most remarkable cases of “unheard of” multiple pregnancies. As per ABC News report, the quadruplets were conceived naturally without any help from the fertility treatment.According to the news, Jenitar Sau Na’amoana was delivered of her quadruplets by caesarean delivery on July 14 in Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Brisbane. The hospital has confirmed that all the four babies are quadruplets who are identical and share one placenta, thus making the case rather unusual.It is reported that Na’amoana was admitted to the hospital at the 25 weeks of her pregnancy as the doctors decided to carefully observe the development of her pregnancy. Three weeks after the admission, she delivered her babies at the 28th week of pregnancy. The infants are presently being looked after in the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital.
Doctors say pregnancy ‘unheard of’
According to Dr. Alexa Bendall, the specialist in fetal medicine and an obstetrician taking care of Na’amoana, this was the first time the hospital ever handled this type of pregnancy. The doctor stated that identical quadruplets that are naturally conceived are estimated to happen in one pregnancy out of 15 million. It is noteworthy that sharing the same placenta makes this pregnancy more unique.“We have never seen a spontaneously conceived pregnancy of this kind with quads,” Dr. Bendall says in a video posted by the hospital. What’s more, according to the doctor, despite the usual complications associated with such pregnancies, mother and her four daughters are now safe. Moreover, she stated that babies are currently “doing extremely well.”The event has gained much attention due to its uniqueness. According to statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are 144 quadruplet births in the US in 2024.Na’amoana and her husband Jortham were already parents to four children, aged between one year old and ten years old. The birth of the quadruplets means that the family size is now double what it was before and there are now a total of eight children. Na’amoana named her four girls Emily, Harriet, Alexa, and Catherine. One of the four, Alexa, was named after Dr. Alexa Bendall, the obstetrician who assisted Na’amoana during the pregnancy and delivery of the four babies.
