TRIGGER WARNING: This article contains mention of accidental death.Glen Hansard, the Academy Award-winning Irish musician, succumbed to injuries from a motorbike crash on the outskirts of Dublin at the age of 56 on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. The celebrated singer-songwriter was in a single-vehicle crash near Strawberry Beds in the early hours. Emergency services responded to the collision on the R109 Lower Road, between Tinkers Hill and Rugged Lane, at 4:30 am.

Glen Hansard’s fatal accident at the age of 56

The Irish police, without naming the singer-songwriter, stated that the man received treatment at the scene but was pronounced dead shortly after, per the Irish Independent. Hansard’s agency released a statement: “With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Glen Hansard, who passed away in the early hours of this morning, following a road traffic accident in Dublin.”Stating the shock of Hansard’s family, the statement continued, “Glen’s family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this tragic loss and respectfully requests privacy at this extremely difficult time. The family is grateful for the support they have received and wishes to thank the emergency services who attended the scene,” before adding, “As this matter remains the subject of an active Garda [Irish Police] investigation, no further comment will be made at this time.”

Taoiseach Micheal Martin paid tribute to the late singer-songwriter, “Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Glen Hansard. A talented musician and actor who made a significant contribution to Ireland’s cultural landscape over many years. My sincere sympathies to his family, friends, and fans.”

Who was Glen Hansard?

Born in Dublin in 1970, Glen Hansard left an indelible mark on the music industry with his innate skills. In 2008, he earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘Falling Slowly,’ which he wrote for the low-budget film ‘Once.’ Spanning more than three decades, the singer’s career was praised critically and publicly. Glen Hansard is survived by his wife, Maire Saaritsa, and their three-year-old son, Christy.
