Indian-origin writer and British Future founder Sunder Katwala has been appointed to the board of the National Lottery Community Fund, one of the UK’s major organisations responsible for distributing grants to community groups and charities.Katwala, 52, began the four-year appointment this week. He will work with chair Dame Julia Cleverdon and other board members on the organisation’s strategy, performance and delivery.
Who is Sunder Katwala?
Katwala is the director of British Future, an independent, non-partisan think tank and charity that focuses on issues including identity, immigration and integration.He is also the author of How to Be a Patriot and has written extensively about immigration and social cohesion in Britain.Since May 2026, Katwala has served as a commissioner of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. He is also a member of the Independent Commission on Community and Cohesion.His previous work has included associations with the Fabian Society and the Foreign Policy Centre.

The National Lottery Community Fund is an executive non-departmental public body overseen by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.According to its 2025-26 annual report, the organisation distributed £939.7 million through more than 14,063 grants across the UK, PTI reported.The funding supports projects intended to deliver long-term benefits for communities and help local organisations develop their work.
