The name of the current capital of Tamil Nadu used to be Madras before it was changed to Chennai in 1996. The name of this city was officially altered under the City of Madras (Alteration of Name) Act, 1996. The Act further stated that the name Chennai had been in use amongst the local people. Indeed, Tamil is the local language of this region, and Chennai was the local name used alongside Madras. However, Madras used to be the official name of this city, and, similar to Bombay, it was a Presidency city under the British. Other Presidency cities included Bombay and Calcutta. The name changed from Madras to Chennai in conformity with the larger pattern of restoring local names. However, today, although Chennai is the official name, older institutions such as the Madras High Court and the University of Madras retain the old name.
