This 17-year-old from Maharashtra risked her life to save over 70 families from a raging fire: How Kareena Thapa’s courage earned her a national honour
Kareena Thapa was honoured with the PM Rashtriya Bal Puraskar for her bravery during a fire in Amravati.

Courage does not always announce itself. Sometimes, it appears in the middle of chaos- in the form of a teenager who sees danger, hears the panic around her and decides to step in. For Kareena Thapa, that moment came when a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Amravati. While others were trying to get away from the flames and smoke, Kareena moved towards the danger. Her quick response during the incident, including helping move a gas cylinder away from the fire, helped prevent the situation from turning into something far more serious. Her act of bravery later earned her the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, one of the country’s highest honours recognising exceptional achievements by children.

The day everything changed

The incident took place on May 17, 2024, at Jai Amba Apartment in the Kathora area of Amravati. Kareena, then 17, noticed smoke coming from a flat on the second floor. Her father, who worked as a security guard at the apartment complex, was alerted to the fire. But Kareena did not simply remain a bystander. As the fire spread and smoke filled the area, she joined the efforts to deal with the situation. One of the biggest dangers was a gas cylinder that was close to the flames. Kareena helped move it away from the fire, reducing the risk of a potentially dangerous explosion.According to a report by ABP Majha, her actions during the fire were widely praised as an example of presence of mind and courage.

The Amravati teenager was recognised for risking her own safety to help families during the fire.

A simple decision in a frightening situation

What makes Kareena’s story particularly striking is that she was not a trained firefighter or emergency responder. She was a teenager who found herself facing a frightening situation and chose to help. The apartment complex was home to several families, and the incident had the potential to put many residents at risk. Nagpur Today reported that Kareena’s actions helped protect residents of the large apartment complex, where around 70 families lived. There was little time for hesitation. In situations involving fire, even a few moments can make a difference. Kareena’s response was instinctive- but it was also remarkably brave.

From Amravati to Rashtrapati Bhavan

Her courage did not go unnoticed. Her name was subsequently put forward for the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar through the district administration and Women and Child Development Department. She was eventually selected for the award in the bravery category. The recognition took her from an apartment complex in Amravati to Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to her on December 26, 2024, on Veer Bal Diwas. The award recognises children for exceptional accomplishments in areas such as bravery, social service, sports, art and culture, science and technology. For Kareena, however, the honour traces back to one frightening day in 2024- and a decision that could easily have gone the other way.

When ordinary people do extraordinary things

Stories of bravery are often associated with firefighters, police officers or members of the armed forces. Kareena’s story offers a different picture. She was an ordinary teenager caught in an extraordinary situation. There was no medal in sight when she stepped forward. There was only a fire, frightened residents and a potentially dangerous gas cylinder. The award came later. What remains at the heart of her story is that brief moment when Kareena chose not to stand back. Sometimes, courage is not about being fearless. It is about recognising that someone needs help- and finding the strength to act despite the fear.
