She married at 19, called her husband “Bhaiya” at first: Woman shares how she found love and built her dream life

When Muskan first saw Anil, she had absolutely no idea that he would one day become her husband. She was just a college student, busy with friends, outings and the carefree world of being 18 and 19. Anil, eight years older than her, was already working as an inspector, and marriage was something he and his family were considering seriously. For Muskan, however, the idea of marrying him was nowhere in her mind. In fact, her first impression of him came from a profile picture that was shared along with her sister’s marriage details. “The picture should be of the boy whom my sister has to marry,” she remembers thinking, admitting that the photograph did not exactly impress her. When she eventually met him in person at her sister’s roka ceremony, however, her opinion changed slightly. “He looks better in person than in the picture!” she recalls with a laugh. Years later, the same man would become the person she says she cannot imagine her life without.

From “Anil Bhaiya” to something more

Is emotional support more important than financial stability in a partner?

There was no dramatic love-at-first-sight moment between Muskan and Anil. Instead, their equation changed gradually. At the time, Muskan noticed that Anil was the most outspoken and fun-loving person in his family. He joked, made people laugh and stood out from everyone around him. That personality slowly made her see him differently. The age difference, however, was always there. Muskan even saved his number as “Anil Bhaiya” and continued calling him that because he was older than her. Things took an unexpected turn on her sister’s wedding day when Anil told her not to call him “Bhaiya” in front of everyone. For Muskan, that moment stayed in her mind. Still, she insists that she never imagined he would become her husband. She was a student when he was already an inspector. Their lives, personalities and stages of life were very different. When his family eventually encouraged him to approach Muskan for marriage, there had been no formal relationship or commitment between them. Instead, there was an unspoken understanding that had slowly developed between the two.

Marriage changed the girl she thought she was

Muskan admits that at 19 years old, she had a very different understanding of marriage. In her imagination, marriage was about travelling, eating good food and enjoying life. The reality, she says, was very different. She entered a joint family without even knowing how to cook properly. Before marriage, she could barely make a few rotis for herself and her mother. Suddenly, she found herself thinking about managing a household, taking responsibility and making sure the people around her were comfortable. Her sister being part of the same family gave her some reassurance. But the bigger transformation happened within Muskan herself. Marriage taught her patience, responsibility and emotional awareness. She learned to think beyond herself and understand the small responsibilities that come with being part of a family. “I never thought I would become this responsible,” she says, joking about how she can now wake up early, cook and manage a home. Yet, she does not believe marriage forced her to lose the carefree girl she once was.

The distance that tested their marriage

Perhaps one of the most difficult parts of Muskan and Anil’s relationship has been the distance created by his service. Because of Anil’s postings and training, the couple has spent long periods apart. Muskan’s pregnancy was also largely a long-distance journey. Soon after they conceived, Anil left for SPG training. He returned for only around three months before being posted to another city, eventually coming home just two days before Muskan’s delivery. For a woman going through pregnancy, it was a period when she naturally needed her husband close to her. But circumstances did not always allow that. The experience, however, taught the couple something important about partnership. For Muskan, being together is not always about physical presence. Sometimes, it is about continuing to choose each other despite circumstances that make being together difficult. The distance was painful, but it also strengthened their understanding of one another. She says they always knew that the distance was physical, while their commitment to each other remained intact.

Today, Muskan is not defined only by her marriage. She describes herself as a makeup artist, former accountant, content creator, influencer, wife, mother and someone deeply connected to styling and creativity. Her biggest dream is surprisingly simple: she wants people to know who Muskan is. She wants to build something of her own and reach a point where people proudly introduce her by her name and the work she has created. Social media gave her the confidence to express herself in ways she once could not have imagined. Her strength, she says, also comes from her family. Losing her father at 16 and growing up alongside her mother and sister brought the three women closer and helped shape the person she became.Looking back at her journey, Muskan does not describe marriage as something that took her youth away. Instead, she sees it as a journey that helped her discover parts of herself she did not know existed. And perhaps the most emotional reflection comes when she speaks to her younger self. The 19-year-old girl who was once nervous about speaking in front of certain people is now someone who can confidently express herself, speak before hundreds and build a life around her own identity. Her story, ultimately, is not simply about an eight-year age gap or a relationship that began unexpectedly. It is about growing into yourself while growing alongside someone else, and discovering that the person you become can be far stronger than the person you once imagined you could be.
