32-year-old Irfan Al-Hussaini died on July 30 in a hospital eight days after he was found unconscious in his Pao Alto apartment which the cops so far called suicide. Now, his family is seeking a detailed probe, calling the circumstances of the Nvidia scientist’s death mysterious. Irfan’s parents, sister and attorney held a press conference last week outside Palo Alto City Hall and released new information pertaining to the case. The role of Irfan’s wife came on the radar as the family alleged that Irfan was suffering from domestic violence, Kron4, NBC Bay Area reported.
Who was Irfan Al-Hussaini?
Irfan Al-Hussaini was a Bangladesh-born AI researcher and senior data scientist at NVIDIA. He completed his graduation at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2017. He moved to the US for higher studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He completed his MS in 2020 and PhD in 2023.Al-Hussaini first interned with NVIDIA from January to May 2022, working on unsupervised learning. After completing his PhD, he joined NVIDIA as a Senior Data Scientist in August 2023.He married Fabia Farlin Athena at Georgia Tech, in Atlanta in 2022.An old social media post of Georgia Tech showed the couple receiving their degrees together. “It took Georgia Tech to bring Irfan Al-Hussaini and Fabia Farlin Athena together. Despite having studied at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology at the same time, the couple didn’t meet until they came 8,000 miles away to study electrical and computer engineering at Tech. Married in 2022, the two received their doctoral degrees at the Spring 2024 Commencement Ceremony. After that, both will be pursuing careers that reflect their individual and shared dreams — Al-Hussaini at NVIDIA and Athena at Stanford University completing a Stanford Energy Postdoctoral Fellowship,” the post said. What happened on July 22?
According to Irfan’s family members, he gave a work presentation around 9am and then sent a Slack message to his manager at 10.02 am that his wife, ‘Athi’ was not feeling well and that he would have to take the day off for the rest of the day. The family said his colleagues told them that they had no idea about who ‘Athi’ was.On 10.22 am, someone called 911 and police responded to Irfan’s address. Palo Alto police officials allegedly told the family they treated the scene inside his Palo Alto home as a medical emergency, not a suspicious death scene. Irfan was taken to the hospital where he died eight days later.“The adult male was treated by PAFD (Pao Alto Fire Department) on scene and transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. At this time, the case is still under investigation pending the report from the medical examiner. We have received materials from the family and others, and our review and investigation is on-going. At this time, neither the police department nor the medical examiner have identified any evidence that the death was the result of foul play,” Pao Alto Police Department lieutenant told KRON4.
‘Impossible for him to take his own life’
Irfan’s sister Saah Al-Hussaini said her brother had many plans for the future and he was never suicidal. “The circumstances are highly suspicious and raise serious questions about what happened,” she said, asking for a clear picture of what happened that day between 10.02 and 10.22 am and whether he sent the message on Slack at all because they said the doctors told them that initial scans suggested Irfan had been without oxygen for nearly 30 to 60 minutes.“So who sent that 10:02 text?” Sarah said. “Does that text fit with the medical timeline?”“My brother Irfan was my best friend. It’s impossible to imagine that he took his own life when he was so full of plans for the future. We’ve been left with unanswered questions while the police department and Medical Examiner point fingers at each other,” the sister said.“The plan that they’re supposed to accept is that he hung himself from a door while his wife was home and he did it in a way that she did not detect or know that it was happening,” the family’s attorney Tony Brass said, as quoted by NBC. “That makes no sense,” he said. The family said Irfan was wearing an Oura ring that morning and believes its data could potentially help establish a timeline for investigators.An attorney for Irfan’s widow said she fully cooperated with the investigation and that a full forensic autopsy was performed on August 31. The attorney said Irfan’s widow has no objections to forensic materials being reviewed, the NBC report said.Irfan’s friends have started a petition for justice, where they said his marital life was in disarray. “It was widely heard that Athena forced him to cut off all communication with his family and close friends over the past couple of years. Some of his dearest and closest friends, people he has known for almost 2 decades, report that he suddenly stopped all contact with them out of the blue, with no explanation. Many of his peers and his inner social circle, also faced abrupt radio-silence.
