Gurugram woman fires cook, guard sends home-cooked food; her suspicious reaction sparks debateWhat would you do if your security guard suddenly sent you home-cooked food after you told him you were looking for a new cook? For Gurugram-based content creator Priyanka Giri, the gesture left her more confused than touched. She shared the incident on Instagram, asking her followers whether it was “creepy or caring”, and the internet had very different views.

‘Is this creepy or caring?’

In her video, Priyanka explained that she and her roommate had recently fired their cook and were looking for someone new. While Priyanka was at work, her security guard messaged her to say he had brought dinner for her.“I was a bit confused. I thought it was because I had helped him out a few times. And I just came from the office, and he was like, ‘Give this to Kritika also.’ And that’s when it struck me that my roommate had told him that we were looking for a cook,” she said. The food had been prepared by the guard’s wife.Priyanka said the guard also told them he didn’t want any money and could send them food every day.“I don’t know how to feel about that,” she said.In the caption accompanying the video, she described the situation as “scary and confusing”. She also clarified that she and the guard weren’t particularly close and said she might have viewed the gesture differently if he had asked them first.

‘You can appreciate kindness and still have boundaries’

Priyanka said she and her roommate did thank the guard for the food. But she also mentioned that he had “yelled” at them while giving it to them, which added to her discomfort. For her, being cautious didn’t mean she was dismissing his gesture.“You can appreciate somebody’s kindness and still have boundaries when something makes you uncomfortable,” she said. That line became central to the debate that followed.

Internet has two very different takes

Some users felt Priyanka may have read too much into what could simply have been an attempt to help his wife find work. One person shared a similar experience, saying their security guard had offered to cook for them or bring rotis from home after they let their cook go. The user believed the offer was likely driven by financial reasons and said they politely declined.Others had a similar explanation for Priyanka’s situation.“Obviously trying to get his wife work, not creepy,” one user commented.Another suggested that the food may have been a way for the guard to let them try his wife’s cooking before considering her for the job.But others understood why Priyanka felt uneasy. Some users pointed out that women can be cautious even when a gesture appears harmless because they may later have to deal with uncomfortable questions about why they accepted something or trusted someone.Another person summed up that perspective by saying women often have to “overthink everything”.Someone else suggested a middle ground: “Sweetly thank him for the gesture and deny the food.”The discussion ultimately wasn’t really about whether home-cooked food is a kind gesture. It was about where kindness ends and personal boundaries begin, and whether the same gesture can feel completely different depending on the relationship between two people.
