Papayas are among our favourite fruits- orange in colours healthy for the gut- that most of us wait to eat every season.Because each one is quite large to consume all at once, we cut them in half and try to store them to eat later. So, if you have ever bought a papaya that looked perfect in the morning and turned into a soft, watery mess by evening, you are not alone.Papaya is one of those fruits that ripens quickly and gives you almost no warning before it changes from fresh to mushy in hours. But what if storing our favourite fruit does not require any fancy storage containers or expensive gadgets?Just a simple strip of aluminium foil, wrapped around the stem, can help trap some of the ethylene gas that ripens the fruit quickly and buy the papaya a few extra days of freshness. While it may sound bizarre, we reserve the aluminum foil for keeping food fresh in tiffins; this trick surprisingly works well for keeping raw fruits as well.

Why do papayas get spoilt too quickly?

Papaya is a climacteric fruit, meaning it keeps ripening after being picked, unlike fruits such as citrus. Research published in Frontiers in Plant Science explains that papaya undergoes a sharp ethylene burst a few days after harvest, which softens the pulp and breaks down its cell walls. Most of this ethylene escapes through the stem area, the spot where the fruit was attached to the plant. Once that gas is produced and stored at that point, ripening speeds up quickly, which is why papaya can look fine one day and feel overly soft the next.

Why does wrapping papaya in an aluminium foil help?

If the ethylene gas mostly escapes from the stem, covering that spot with a barrier should slow its release.Apart from that, if the papaya is cut in half, then the entire cut surface should be covered in the aluminium foil along with the stem of the fruit.Even though the fruit does not stop ripening completely, it can meaningfully slow it down, giving you more time before the fruit turns mushy.

How to wrap papaya with foil, step by step

Start with a papaya that is ripe but still firm, not one that is already soft. Wipe the stem area dry, since moisture can encourage mould instead of slowing ripening. Tear a small square of aluminium foil, nearly the size of your palm, and wrap it tightly around the stem end where the fruit was cut, covering about an inch or two of the surface. Moreover, if the papaya is cut in half, remove the seeds and cover the cut-out portion with the foil to prevent spoilage.Press it firmly so no gaps are left for gas to escape easily. Store the papaya at room temperature, away from direct sunlight or other ripening fruit.Wrapping the fruit in aluminium foil is effective when combined with smart storage habitsKeep papaya away from bananas, apples, and avocados, since these are also high ethylene producers and will increase ripening if kept close together.Avoid the fridge until the papaya is fully ripe, as cold temperatures before that point can cause chilling injury. Once ripe, refrigeration can extend its life by a couple more days.
