Sunny Deol-starrer ‘Batwara 1947’ arrived in theatres with considerable expectations, riding on the scale of the project, Aamir Khan‘s association as a producer and Preity Zinta‘s return to the big screen. However, the film has struggled to translate that anticipation into box office success and is currently well short of recovering its reported budget.Batwara 1947 Movie ReviewDirected by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film opened with Rs 5.75 crore on Day 1 before witnessing a strong jump on Saturday, when it collected Rs 13.50 crore. The momentum did not sustain, with Sunday’s collection dropping to Rs 7.25 crore and the first Monday bringing in just Rs 2 crore. ‘Batwara 1947’ eventually wrapped up its opening week with Rs 33.60 crore.The film has remained subdued in its second week as well. It added Rs 75 lakh on the second Friday, followed by Rs 1.15 crore on Saturday and Rs 1.30 crore on Sunday. The weekday collections have been particularly weak, with Day 11 bringing in only Rs 35 lakh. On the second Tuesday, Day 12, the film earned Rs 55 lakh.With these collections, ‘Batwara 1947’ has taken its India net total to Rs 37.70 crore. Given that the film was reportedly mounted on a budget of around Rs 120 crore, its current theatrical performance points towards a significant loss.The film’s underwhelming run has also prompted trade analysts to examine why it failed to connect with audiences despite positive elements. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh recently shared his assessment with Bollywood Hungama, admitting that the film’s failure surprised him.“What has really surprised me is why this film has not worked. In my opinion, it was a well-made film. I genuinely felt that the emotions between Shabana Azmi and Sunny Deol were very well captured on screen. The performances were of a very high order, while Rajkumar Santoshi’s direction was top-notch. The finale was very gripping. I am still unable to figure out and put a finger on why the film did not work.”Adarsh also addressed the argument that the audience may have expected Sunny Deol to deliver the kind of high-octane performance associated with his recent successes.He continued, “A lot of people told me, and I even read online, that Sunny’s image is associated with films like Gadar (2001), Gadar 2 (2023), Jaat (2025), etc., where he is seen screaming and indulging in action. But I don’t feel that Sunny was mellow over here. He was mellow only up to a point, and later, he did indulge in action. Nevertheless, it was a well-made film that did not get its due.”Despite its strong cast, experienced director and considerable production scale, ‘Batwara 1947’ has therefore failed to find the kind of audience response needed to turn its theatrical run into a commercial success.Meanwhile, it may now end its theatrical run with the release of Yash starrer Toxic, which will occupy major screens across the country.
