Katie Zacharia, the new press secretary of White House, made headlines on her first day at the job. And now her interviews are generating more such headlines as one of her statements has drawn a comment from China. Zacharia spent years in China after her marriage as her husband had to shift to China for work. Zacharia too started working at a law firm in China. Speaking to conservative commentator Jack Posobiec, Zacharia said that when she returned from China, she wondered how that country was on the horizon without even proper toilets.“I remember this very distinctly, having just come from China, thinking, ‘How is China the next country on the horizon? They don’t even have proper toilets’,” she said. The comment came as she was speaking about the perception in 2016 that China would soon overtake the United States. “We were all being told Hillary (Clinton) was going to win. The golden days or the glory days of America were over. That China was on the horizon,” Zacharia said.South China Morning Post reported the reaction from the Chinese government on the toilet statement. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said: “[We] welcome her to visit China more often when she has the opportunity.”Zacharia worked as an associate at Zhong Lun Law Firm, one of China’s biggest, in Beijing from 2011 to 2013.In China, foreign nationals can be hired by law firms but only Chinese nationals can be licensed as lawyers. Zacharia was never licensed to practise law — not in China, not in the US. She clarified that she did not pass the bar exam in California in 2011, which was her first bar exam. After that, she never retook it as she did not intend to practise law. She worked as an adviser, which did not require her to clear the bar exam. She also clarified that she never called herself an attorney — it was misinformation. She said she called herself a lawyer as advised by experts in the profession who told her that she could call herself a lawyer.Zacharia could be returning to China as early as next month when President Donald Trump is expected to take part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in the southern city of Shenzhen.
