Lovepreet Singh wins silver after record-breaking performance
India’s first medal of the day came in the men’s +110kg weightlifting competition, where Lovepreet Singh produced the performance of his career to claim the silver medal.Lovepreet lifted 176kg in the snatch, setting a new Indian national record, before adding 212kg in the clean and jerk, another national record, to finish with a combined total of 388kg.

The Indian weightlifter missed out on the gold medal by the narrowest of margins, finishing just 1kg behind New Zealand’s David Liti, who claimed the Commonwealth title.The silver medal was India’s eighth weightlifting medal of the Glasgow Games, underlining another successful campaign for one of the country’s strongest disciplines.

Seema Kaliramna battles through difficult final to claim bronze
India’s second medal arrived later in the day as Seema Kaliramna secured bronze in the women’s discus throw final at the EDF Scotstoun Stadium.It was far from a straightforward competition for the Indian thrower.Seema opened the final with a foul before responding with a throw of 57.32 metres in the second round.She then produced what proved to be the medal-winning effort on her third attempt, throwing 58.65 metres to move into the bronze-medal position.

The remainder of her competition was challenging, with four of her six attempts ending in fouls. However, her third-round mark proved enough to keep her on the podium.Jamaica’s Samantha Hall won gold with a throw of 61.66m, while Canada’s Julia Tunks took silver with 60.67m.The bronze was India’s 17th medal overall and the fourth medal won by the athletics contingent at the Games.

There was also heartbreak for fellow Indian thrower Nidhi Rani, who narrowly missed out on joining Seema on the podium.Nidhi steadily improved throughout the competition and reached 57.10m with her third throw but ultimately finished fourth, just outside the medals.

After eight days of competition, India has collected 17 medals, comprising:

- Bronze: 4
The medal haul has been shared primarily between weightlifting and athletics.Athletics and para-athletics have contributed eight medals (2 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze), while weightlifting has also produced eight medals (1 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze). Other Indians narrowly miss the podium
Although India added two medals on Thursday, several other athletes fell just short of podium finishes.In the women’s +86kg weightlifting competition, Martina Devi Maibam finished fifth with a combined lift of 245kg.In the men’s shot put final, Tajinderpal Singh Toor also finished fifth, while compatriot Samardeep Singh Gill placed seventh.
Tejaswin Shankar in historic decathlon medal hunt
India also has a major medal opportunity unfolding in the decathlon, where Tejaswin Shankar has delivered a sensational opening day performance.He enters Day 2 in second place with 4,339 points, sitting just 14 points behind Olympic champion Damian Warner (4,353 points) after an incredible first day in Glasgow.Because the decathlon is a gruelling two-day event, his competition is only halfway done. He must now face the final five events on Day 2 to determine the final medal placements, with everything still to play for in one of the most demanding contests in athletics.
More medal opportunities on the horizon
Thursday also proved productive in setting up medal chances for the remaining days of the Games.India enjoyed a clean sweep in the men’s javelin qualification, with Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh all advancing to the final.Neeraj led the Indian trio with a throw of 79.61m, followed by Rohit Yadav’s 78.37m and Yash Vir Singh’s 78.36m, with all three comfortably progressing.There was further success in the men’s triple jump qualifiers as Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran both booked places in the final.With multiple Indian contenders still in medal contention across athletics and other disciplines, and Tejaswin Shankar poised for a dramatic decathlon finish, India will look to build on its tally of 17 medals and climb further up the standings during the closing days of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
