NEW DELHI: A four-medal haul in Glasgow has opened a new window of opportunity for Indian judokas. The sport’s Commonwealth Games success paved the way for overseas training ahead of two major international assignments. The Asian Games-bound Indian team will travel to Japan for a pre-Games camp, while another set of judokas will also get an overseas stint ahead of the World Championships. The sports ministry has also cleared a Japan camp for the senior squad preparing for the World Judo Championships in Baku from Oct 4.India’s impressive Glasgow campaign, including maiden CWG golds for Asmita and Harsh Singh, helped strengthen the case for the overseas exposure. Asmita Dey (below 48kg), Yamini Mourya (below 57kg) and Inunganbi Takhellambam (below 70kg) will train at Tsukuba University from Sept 5 to Oct 2, gaining valuable exposure and acclimatising to conditions ahead of the Aichi-Nagoya Games, which begin on Sept 19, TOI has learnt.Several Glasgow participants, however, are not part of the Asian Games squad as they do not meet the selection benchmark of being among Asia’s top six individually or top eight in teams.
