Growing up along Adobe Creek in Mountain View, Kiefer Chow spent his childhood afternoons doing something most people would call child’s play: stacking sticks and mud into makeshift dams. Years later, that same instinct would grow into something far more consequential. Alongside his sister Amelia, Kiefer founded Eco-Engineering In Action, a youth-led non-profit built on a simple but powerful premise, that beavers, long dismissed as a nuisance, might hold the key to protecting California from its own worsening wildfires. As blazes have grown longer, hotter and more frequent across the state over the past decade, leaving behind polluted air, vanishing habitats and mounting public anxiety, the Chow siblings set out to turn that fear into something they could actually build. Their answer was the beaver dam analogue: a hand-constructed structure that mimics nature’s own flood-control system, slowing rivers, greening parched land, and quietly reshaping the fight against fire, one dam at a time.

The group states that it draws its methods directly from beavers and fungi, describing its mission as taking cues from “nature’s best eco-engineers” to expand wetlands, remediate degraded soil, promote carbon sequestration, and increase aquifer recharge.In a promotional video released by the organisation, the siblings explain their founding motivation more personally, saying they set out to “channel climate anxiety into action” by building beaver dam analogues in partnership with local restoration groups such as Symbiotic Restorations and the American River Conservancy. According to National Geographic, the dams work by slowing water flow, increasing groundwater and wetland coverage, and thereby drawing fire away from the land while also boosting carbon storage and biodiversity. In July 2025, 25 youth and adult volunteers joined crew members from Symbiotic Restorations to construct eight BDAs along the North Fork American River, a project supported by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as part of a wider goal to establish 100 BDAs in the area by 2026.Kiefer described the noticeable effect of the day’s work, writing that water levels rose visibly by late afternoon and that the group looked forward to the structures eventually attracting real beavers to maintain them. Slowing river run-off in this way recharges groundwater, supports species such as the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog and willow flycatcher, and provides longer, cooler water release into the Cosumnes River that benefits both wildlife and communities downstream.

Beyond construction, the siblings have built a broader ecosystem of outreach and recognition around their work. According to the organisation, it has received recognition from the American River Conservancy for supporting habitat restoration through equipment, tools, and funding. The group has also been named a recipient of the National Geographic Society’s Slingshot Challenge, which highlights youth-led environmental solutions; in its own description of the award, the Society noted that the organisation, inspired by the beaver as nature’s engineer, is building analogue dams to mitigate forest fires and restore habitats.The group continues to expand its reach through workshops, webinars, and appearances at local community fairs, while partnering with geoengineers and ecologists to foster hands-on learning and long-term stewardship of the land. Volunteers also plant willows near completed dams to draw in real beavers over time, and the organisation conducts citizen science water-quality testing at project sites to track ecological change. The response from local communities has been strong, with the group describing “overwhelming interest and engagement” as it continues its work.
