Seven militants belonging to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed by security forces during an intelligence-based operation in north-western Pakistan on Friday, according to an official. The operation took place in Eidak, an area of North Waziristan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which has witnessed repeated militant attacks in recent years.Security forces also destroyed several hideouts during the operation, the official said. The action was carried out under the government’s Azm-e-Istehkam move, which is part of Pakistan’s purported efforts to tackle terrorism.Pakistan’s federal government refers to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, as Fitna al Khawarij.Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has remained a major hotspot for militant violence, partly because of its border with Afghanistan. The region has also seen repeated military operations and the movement of fighters across the border. The TTP ended its ceasefire with the Pakistani military-led government in November 2022. Since then, the group has carried out repeated attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly against security forces.Figures from the Centre for Research and Security Studies show that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was Pakistan’s worst-hit region for violence in the third quarter of 2025. It recorded 638 violence-related deaths, accounting for nearly 71 per cent of the national total, along with 221 violent incidents, or more than 67 per cent of the total.Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, both of which border Afghanistan, together accounted for more than 96 per cent of militant-related violence recorded in Pakistan during that period.Separately, Reuters sources reported an attack on a convoy of paramilitary troops in the volatile Kurram district. Roadside bombs struck the convoy before a large group of militants opened fire, according to five Pakistani security officials. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack in a statement to a Reuters reporter. Pakistan’s military public relations wing did not immediately respond to requests for comment.Security forces launched a search operation to locate those responsible, while the government had not issued an official statement at the time of the report. The TTP has intensified attacks on Pakistani security forces in recent months. The group seeks to overthrow the Pakistani government and establish its own hardline interpretation of Islamic rule.Islamabad has accused Afghanistan of allowing the TTP to use its territory to train fighters and plan attacks inside Pakistan. Kabul has denied the allegation.
