Depp shared this insightful thought while attending and speaking at one of the press conferences held at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in France in 2023. At the time, the actor had been attending the film festival in order to promote his film, ‘Jeanne du Barry.’The actor deeply reflected on modern media and social pressures, further talking about how people often harbor the feelings to speak up and to make their stand in situations; however, more often than not, they are unable to do so. Things like self-preservation often cause them to suppress their true thoughts from the world, regardless of whether they are right or wrong. He also comments on how the modern world of trending materials works and how everyone often “falls in line” with the thing or ideology or person who is most popular, following a form of “mob mentality” and giving up free thinking.Today’s day and age often forces people to conform to what is “social acceptable” rather than stand up for what they independently believe is the right thing to do. People are stuck in a chain, essentially copying the person ahead of them in line to avoid standing out or being targeted by the majority.In his quote, however, the actor does not call people out for conforming to the normal that has been set on by society. He acknowledges that there is nothing wrong with doing what everyone else is doing, that choosing safety over authenticity is a valid choice for some people. However, he personally still views this as being in constraints. Rather, he comments that it is fine if the people around him wish to conform to other people, despite having their own independent thoughts, but he himself will never be one of those people.He concludes by adding that he will be on the “other side,” which essentially represents things like independence, becoming an outcast, and disregarding the norm, and not caring too much about institutional approval. Earlier this year, while speaking to Variety, Cage recalled how he convinced Depp to start acting. The 62-year-old shared, “We were dating the same girl, and he came to LA, not wanting to like me. He was a guitar player. I liked him right away, and he said, ‘I like Nic… I can’t like him.’”He continued: “We became very good friends, and we were playing Monopoly one day. He was having a very hard time financially—he was selling pens, I believe, and I let him live in my apartment, but then he started stealing my money to buy drinks—and I said, ‘Why don’t you just try acting?’ And he said, ‘I can’t act.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, you can.
