The month of Sawan 2026 will begin on July 30, marking the start of one of the most sacred months for devotees of Lord Shiva. Sawan is also called Shravan, and it signifies spiritual discipline, purity, emotional control, fasting and prayer. On Mondays of Sawan, the worship of Shiva is very powerful. Many devotees keep fasts, visit Shiva temples, pour water on the Shiva Lingam, chant mantras and pray for peace, health, blessings for marriage, family harmony and the alleviation of life’s struggles. However, preparing your home, mind and routine before the first Monday of Sawan is very important. Sawan worship can also be given more meaning and peace by a new beginning.
1. Clean Your Puja Space
Make sure you clean your prayer space well before the first Monday. Remove any puja materials which are no longer in use. Remove dust, broken items, burnt items, old flowers, and incense sticks.Keep it clean and simple. Keep the Shiva Lingam, Shiva picture or family deity in a neat place. Prepare a pot of water, incense, white flowers, bilva leaves and a diya.A clean puja room calms the mind before the worship.
2. Arrange Your Sawan Puja Items
Don’t wait till Monday morning to make all the arrangements. Make sure you have all the puja essentials ready in advance. You may require clean water, milk, bilva leaves, white flowers, sandalwood, akshat, fruits, honey, curd, ghee and incense.Use only what is possible and suitable according to your family’s traditions. Simple devotion makes lord shiva happy. Even clean water that is given in faith is potent.
3. Decide Your Fasting Method
Many people keep Sawan Somwar Vrat, but the method may vary. Some people eat only milk and fruits. Some people have one sattvic meal. Some follow family traditions.Figure out what is feasible and healthy for you before the first Monday. Don’t copy others. If you have health issues, avoid strict fasting and go for simple devotion. The goal is purity, not physical strain.
4. Control Speech and Anger
Sawan is not just about offering water to Shiva. It also deals with the regulation of internal poison. Anger, lies, jealousy, harsh words and ego disrupt the energy of worship. Before the first Monday, resolve to speak softly and not enter needless fights. If you have hurt someone, try to make amends.Lord Shiva blesses the one whose heart is pure.
5. Start chanting Om Namah Shivaya
Begin chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” every Monday. Chant 21, 51, or 108 times, depending on your availability. This mantra calls forth strength, protection, surrender and peace within. It primes the mind for a deeper level of devotion in Sawan.
