Shani Amavasya and Sarva Pitru Amavasya on the Same Day: Why 10 October 2026 Is a Double Remedy Day
On October 10, 2026, families across India will commemorate Sarva Pitru Amavasya and Shani Amavasya. This significant day involves honoring ancestors through rituals of tarpan and visiting Shani temples, while emphasizing the importance of karma. The sacred peepal tree is essential for these rites, linking the living to their forebears and Shani Dev.

This Saturday is going to be a busy one in many Indian homes. Morning tarpan for the ancestors. A shraddh meal around noon. And by evening, a queue of devotees at the local Shani temple. That’s because 10 October 2026 brings two observances together. It’s Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the last and most important day of Pitru Paksha. And since the new moon falls on a Saturday, it’s also Shani Amavasya.

Why the Pairing Matters

Both days deal with karma, just from different angles.Shani Dev is the judge of our own actions. Pitru Paksha, meanwhile, is about the karma we inherit, the unfinished business of earlier generations. Astrologers often link Pitru Dosh in a kundli with an afflicted Sun, and Shani happens to be Surya’s son. So on this day, both kinds of karmic debt can be addressed together. Then there’s the crow. In Pitru Paksha, crows are believed to carry food to the ancestors. Crows are also Shani Dev’s vahan. Put out one plate of food for them on Saturday, and you’ve honoured both at once.

The Peepal Connection

The peepal tree ties the day together even more neatly. The Pitrs are believed to reside in it. There’s also an old story about the sage Pippalad, who was raised under a peepal tree. Shani Dev is said to have promised that anyone who worships the peepal on a Saturday would be spared his harsh effects. So a simple diya under a peepal on this evening counts twice.

How to Plan the Day

Start early with a bath. Offer tarpan facing south, with water, black til and kusha grass. Take the names of the ancestors you remember, and pray for those you don’t.Complete the shraddh meal in the afternoon, ideally during Kutup or Rohina muhurat. Set aside food for a cow, a dog and the crows before the family eats. After sunset, light a mustard oil diya under a peepal tree. Walk around the tree seven times if you can. Then place another diya at your main door, facing south, to bid the Pitrs farewell.Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa in the evening is a popular way to ease Shani’s influence too.

What to Donate

Black til works for both Shani and the ancestors. A warm blanket, a pair of slippers or a meal given to a daily wage worker are all considered good offerings on this day. Feeding a black dog is another traditional remedy.

Before You Sleep

Amavasya ends at around 9:19 PM. Navratri begins with Ghatasthapana the very next morning. So once the evening rituals are done, tidy the puja corner and keep the Kalash ready.
