Michigan Democrat-socialist El-Sayed has property in India in wife’s name.

Abdul El-Sayed could become the first Muslim senator in US history after he won the Democratic primary on his socialist message but now, once again, the properties that he owns even outside the US have come on the radar. In his most recent financial disclosure filed July 27, 2026, it has been revealed that his wife, Sarah Jukaku, who is a psychiatrist, owns two overseas rental properties — one in Bengaluru, India and the other in Dubai, the UAE.His June 2025 disclosure listed the Bangalore property as his wife’s only overseas rental. Valued between $100,001 and $250,000, it generated between $5,001 and $15,000 in rental income. The Dubai property, also valued between $100,001 and $250,000, first appeared in the latest annual disclosure, filed hours before the July 27 debate. Combined, the properties have a reported gross value of $200,002 to $500,000.El-Sayed said the properties outside the US are inherited by his wife, and since he filed his assets with his wife, they appeared to be millionaires jointly, but his career has never been about “trying to maximize on money”.

Who is Sarah Jukaku?

According to El-Sayed’s book Healing Politics: A Doctor’s Journey into the Heart of Our Political Epidemic, El-Sayed wrote that his wife’s parents came to the US from a village in India. El-Sayed maet Jukaku during their time at the University of Michigan and were featured in a 2006 article published by the college’s student publication The Michigan Daily. She told The Michigan Daily that they got engaged when she was a freshman. At the time, El-Sayed told the newspaper that being “so willing to commit to marriage is a byproduct of this general self-control” taught by their religion, Islam.Egyptian-origin El-Sayed, a 41-year-old epidemiologist, is new hope for the Democrats after Zohran Mamdani. Sayed succeeded in the Tuesday (Aug. 4) primary amid rising anti-Muslim hate, intimidation and discrimination incidents across the country. At the same time, his victory follows that of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, also the first Muslim to serve in his role, who won the mayoral contest in 2025. Sayed follows a now-established pattern of progressive Muslims such as Mamdani, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn but US never had a Muslim senator in its history.
